  • Destination pages provide seasonal pricing, driving guidance, and route restrictions

What this Localrent review covers

Localrent is an online marketplace and booking intermediary for independent local car-rental companies. It compares vehicles from smaller regional providers and displays vehicle photos, rental cost, deposit, insurance, mileage, driver requirements, payment methods, delivery options, and additional services before the customer pays an advance.

This review focuses on how the booking process works, what the displayed price includes, advance payments, security deposits, insurance, free-cancellation filters, documents, vehicle inspection, cross-border and road restrictions, current destination pricing, and four representative Localrent offerings. It is a research-based editorial review using Localrent's official About, booking, destination, offer, cancellation, and country-terms pages rather than an independent inspection of every rental company or vehicle.

Localrent is a broker, not the vehicle owner

Localrent connects the customer with a local rental provider and processes the online booking request. The individual rental company supplies the car, checks the driver's documents, collects the remaining balance and security deposit, and signs the final rental agreement at pickup.

This distinction matters because fleet condition, office procedures, payment methods, deposit-return timing, insurance details, mileage, delivery fees, border permission, and support can differ between providers even within the same country. The vehicle card and emailed voucher should be read together with the rental agreement presented at pickup.

How booking works

The user selects a destination, dates, pickup and return locations, then filters available cars by class, transmission, deposit, insurance, mileage, age, driving experience, payment method, free cancellation, delivery, and other options. After selecting a vehicle, the customer enters driver and contact details and pays an online advance.

Localrent generally describes the advance as 15–20% of the total rental price. The remaining rental amount and any security deposit are paid to the local provider at pickup using the payment methods shown for the selected vehicle. A voucher containing the booking information and provider contact details is sent by email.

Pricing is destination-, season-, and vehicle-specific

Localrent publishes complete price breakdowns for individual offers, but there is no single global daily price. Rates vary by destination, season, rental duration, vehicle class, transmission, airport or address delivery, insurance, mileage, additional driver, child seat, cross-city return, and other options.

The country pages provide useful seasonal averages rather than guaranteed quotes. For example, the current tables list average July prices around €42 in Montenegro, €44 in Greece, and $43 in Georgia. The actual checkout price for the selected dates and vehicle is the relevant figure.

Deposits and payment methods

Security-deposit amounts and accepted methods vary by car. Some offers require a credit card, others accept a debit card or cash, and selected vehicles can be rented without a security deposit. The online advance itself is normally paid by bank card.

A “no deposit” listing means the local provider does not require a separate security guarantee at pickup; it does not mean that the rental is free from damage liability, traffic fines, fuel charges, tolls, cleaning charges, or contractual obligations. Customers should confirm when and how any deposit will be released and retain the return inspection document.

Insurance requires reading the exclusions

Insurance types and deductibles differ by offer. Localrent may show TPL, CDW, extended coverage, or optional insurance on the vehicle card. A label such as “full” or “extended” should not be assumed to cover every event.

Country terms can exclude wheels, tires, glass, underbody, interior, roof, lost keys, off-road driving, unauthorized drivers, prohibited routes, alcohol, negligence, and failures to obtain a police report. The customer should review the exact exclusions, deductible, deposit relationship, and accident-report procedure before driving.

Documents and driver requirements

Customers normally need an original passport or accepted identity document, an original valid driving licence, and the Localrent voucher. Age and driving-experience requirements are listed separately for each vehicle and can differ between two cars of the same model.

An International Driving Permit may be required depending on the destination and the language or convention format of the national licence. Digital copies are often not accepted. The licence, passport, payment card where required, and IDP should remain valid through the final rental day.

Inspecting the vehicle at pickup

Before signing, inspect the body, wheels, glass, roof, lights, interior, fuel level, spare or repair kit, and supplied safety equipment. Photograph or record a continuous video of the vehicle and ensure every existing mark appears on the handover report.

Confirm the correct fuel policy, mileage limit, emergency contact, insurance documents, permitted drivers, return location, late-return rule, toll procedure, and deposit amount. Do not rely only on a verbal promise that conflicts with the voucher or contract.

Road, ferry, and border restrictions

Permission to take a rental vehicle on a ferry, across a border, onto an island, or along a mountain route is not automatic. Greece asks customers to obtain authorization for ferry travel, while the current Georgia page states that Localrent vehicles may not cross Georgia's borders and lists several prohibited mountain and unpaved routes.

Driving on an unauthorized road or crossing a border without permission can invalidate insurance. The complete route should be disclosed before booking, and any authorization should be written into the voucher or rental agreement.

Cancellation and booking changes

Localrent's booking terms state that standard bookings can generally be cancelled without penalty at least seven days before pickup, or at least 30 days before pickup for luxury cars and convertibles. Bookings carrying the Free Cancellation option can generally be cancelled at least 24 hours before pickup.

A payment-service fee of 6% can be retained, and late cancellations or no-shows can result in loss of the advance. The terms state that an eligible advance refund is returned to the original payment source within 14 days after the request is received. Modification may require cancelling the old booking and creating a new one, so the original vehicle can become available to another customer.

Support and provider communication

The voucher includes contacts for the rental provider, while Localrent maintains customer support for booking questions and disputes. The customer should keep the booking phone number active and reachable by calls or messaging before pickup and throughout the rental.

For breakdowns, accidents, delays, or collection problems, contact the provider immediately and follow the written instructions. Waiting until after the rental to report an event can affect insurance and dispute resolution.

Who should consider Localrent

Localrent is most useful for independent travelers who want to compare smaller local rental companies, see the deposit and payment method before booking, choose airport or address delivery, filter for no-credit-card or free-cancellation options, and rent in destinations where local fleets can be more flexible than large international chains.

Who should compare alternatives

Compare alternatives if a standardized global loyalty program, guaranteed airport counter, one corporate fleet, direct ownership of the vehicle by the booking brand, a single worldwide insurance policy, or immediate in-person support from a large chain is more important than local selection.

Final verdict

Localrent provides a clear and useful comparison layer for local car rentals. Its strongest features are vehicle-specific terms, low- or no-deposit filters, authentic listing photos, small online advances, delivery options, and destination-specific guidance.

The principal limitation is variability: the actual rental experience and contract depend on the selected local provider and vehicle. Read the full card, save the voucher, inspect the car carefully, confirm insurance and route permissions, and choose the Free Cancellation filter when travel plans may change.

The brand-level tradeoffs

Reasons to compare alternatives

  • Service quality and contract terms vary by local provider
